Abstract:
GMNFTRAILS contains minor Forest Service roads and all trails within the proclamation boundary of the Green Mountain National Forest and many of the public roads and trails from Addison, Bennington, Rutland, Washington, Windham, and Windsor Counties, Vermont.
A road is a motor vehicle travel way over 50 inches wide, unless classified and managed as a trail. A road may be classified or unclassified. Classified roads are roads within National Forest System lands planned and managed for motor vehicle access including State roads, county roads, private roads, permitted roads, and Forest Service roads. Unclassified roads are roads not intended to be a part of nor managed as a part of the forest transportation system, such as temporary roads, and unplanned, unengineered, unauthorized off-road vehicle tracks and abandoned travel ways.
A trail is a linear feature constructed for the purpose of allowing the free movement of people or stock.
Original linework was derived from Forest Service Cartographic Feature Files and supplemented with state-wide data from the Vermont Agency of Transportation. However, these original sources have been highly refined and edited. See the Data Quality section for more details.
GMNFTRAILS dataset contains three main feature classes 1) route_ltat = Long Trail (LT) and Appalachian Trail (AT) within the GMNF 2) route_trail = All trails within the GMNF 3) route_road = All roads (excluding highways) within the GMNF
GMNFTRAILS exludes the route_highway and "arc" features from the original TRAVEL_ROUTE coverage.

In general, the travel_route layer (which was the basis of GMNFTRAILS) is complete for Forest Service roads and trails within the proclamation boundary of the Green Mountain National Forest. For other public and private roads and trails in the adjacent six-county area some data is inevitably out of date or missing. The layer undergoes continuous updates to improve accuracy and completeness, although Forest Service road data are more aggressively maintained than other roads. Private and other public road data are not as well-maintained since they do not apply as well to the mission of the Forest.
NOTE: It should be noted that the GMNFTRAILS layer includes a subset of features from the GMNF travel_route layer.

The original data were derived from Cartographic Feature Files (roads and trails within all quadrangles within or partially within the Forest) in 1995. Later, a need was identified for roads and trails data across a greater extent, and Vermont Agency of Transportation data was incorporated in 2000. Many updates have been made to both location and attribute data since the original data collection. Location sources include GPS data, digitizing from DOQ's, and updates from state, county, or other agency sources. Sources of attribute data include the original VAOT layer, a roads inventory conducted by the Forest Service, the FS INFRA application, FS TIS (Transportation Inventory System, precursor to INFRA), and other sources.

The TRAVEL_ROUTE coverage (and LTAT extract) were provided to VCGI by Bruce Reid from the GMNF on 8/28/2003. VCGI extracted the route_road, route_trail, and route_ltat from the data provided. GMNFTRAILS does not include the route_highway or arcs from the original TRAVEL_ROUTE coverage. VCGI modifed the TRAVEL_ROUTE metadata prepared by GMNF in order to create the metadata for GMNFTRAILS. The data was loaded into the VGIS Data Warehouse for distribution.

An updated version of trail and road data was provided to VCGI by G.Stoddard from the GMNF in March 2009. VCGI used the data to replace the existing version of ROAD and TRAIL feature classes. The LTAT layer was updated by extracing features labeled as Appalachian Trail or Long Trail in the TRAIL layer. VCGI modifed this metadata record based on informatio submited by G. Stoddard. The data was loaded into the VGIS Data Warehouse for distribution.
