Description:
Abstract:
This database contains town-level totals of documented species records for several plant and animal taxa including vascular plants, trees, bryophytes, ferns, fish, mammals, and reptiles & amphibians. Also contained are number of Black Bear kills by town for the years 1980-1996, and number of non-hunter Moose deaths by town for the years 1980-1997. A breeding bird atlas collected at finer resolution than town-level is included but was not summarized by town. Data were originally acquired from Vermont's Agency of Natural Resources (ANR), U.S. Forest Service, museum and herbarium collections, and other published or unpublished atlases.
Purpose: Component to the "Vermont Biodiversity Project" (VBP).
Supplemental_Information:
Included with the download of the EcologicFauna_ATLAS database are a number of INFO datafiles (Note; databases are included as arc export files .E00. Please remember to use the 'INFO' option when using the Arc/Info IMPORT command).
There is variable documentation on specific item names, definition of species, and the codesets used (in some instances) to reflect species type. The following paragraphs are the best description of what is contained within the INFO datafiles. Citations for further information are included where possible. For further questions here, contact the School of Natural Resources, Spatial Analysis Lab (802) 656-3324. >>>
B_AND_B.DAT - Contains town-occurrence records of vascular plants for use in the Vermont Biodiversity Project. Dataset fields (columns) include family, common family name, species name, common name, town, county, prepared-by, date issued, and voucher_sp. Logical_Consistency_Report:
Included with the EcologicFauna_ATLAS coverage in the download are a number of INFO data tables which reflect numerous details about species occurences in the EcologicFauna_ATLAS. All INFO datafiles (species atlases) have been summarized to show unique species-by-town occurrences (i.e. Total Number of Species Documented for Each Town).
BEARKILL ATTRIBUTES - Contained within the ATLAS coverage are Bear kill figures. These are records of Black Bear kills by Vermont town for the years 1980-1996. Data from Fish and Wildlife Department, VT Agency of Natural Resources, were acquired in the form of a spreadsheet via the Department of Biology, Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT. Spatial Analysis Lab personnel at the University of Vermont, Burlington, converted the spreadsheet to INFO Datafile format (Arc/INFO, ESRI) and replaced town identifiers with town names taken from Arc/INFO geodataset TOWN. Dataset fields (columns) include county, town name, number of males harvested, and number of females harvested. Datafile contains one record for each of 227 towns for which harvests were recorded.
MOOSE MORTALITY ATTRIBUTE - Datafile contains records of non-hunter Moose mortality by Vermont town for the years 1980-1997. Dataset field (columns) is number harvested. Data includes one record for each of 182 towns for which harvests were recorded.
Completeness_Report:
This datalayer has attributes for all taxa except birds. This is because the breeding bird atlas use blocks instead of towns.
