Description:
Abstract:
These data were developed from materials used by the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) to prepare county soil surveys.
- All VT counties available in SSURGO2 Certified Format.
These counties have been SSURGO certified. Field maps were manually compiled to stable base templates, which overlay RF 20,000 scale orthophotographs based on Vermont State Plane Meter Grid. Stable base templates were roads, surface water features, and civil boundaries. The stable base templates ensure the soils data will be compatible with existing Vermont State data layers. The soil delineations and special features were compiled directly on the stable base templates using an orthophoto-background underneath and avoiding line collisons with plotted digital layers. The soil delineations were scanned (or digitized) and special features were digitized.

Use_Constraints:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service, should be acknowledged as the data source in products derived from these data.
This data set is not designed for use as a primary regulatory tool in permitting or citing decisions, but may be used as a reference source. This is public information and may be interpreted by organizations, agencies, units of government, or others based on needs; however, they are responsible for the appropriate application. Federal, State, or local regulatory bodies are not to reassign to the Natural Resources Conservation Service any authority for the decisions that they make. The Natural Resources Conservation Service will not perform any evaluations of these maps for purposes related solely to State or local regulatory programs.
Photographic or digital enlargement of these maps to scales greater than at which they were originally mapped can cause misinterpretation of the data. If enlarged, maps do not show the small areas of contrasting soils that could have been shown at a larger scale. The depicted soil boundaries, interpretations, and analysis derived from them do not eliminate the need for onsite sampling, testing, and detailed study of specific sites for intensive uses. Thus, these data and their interpretations are intended for planning purposes only. Digital data files are periodically updated. Files are dated, and users are responsible for obtaining the latest version of the data.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Attribute Accuracy - Attribute accuracy was tested by manual comparison of the soil field maps with hard copy plots of the digital data. All MUID values were verified against a master table.
Topological Integrity - All polygons have only one label point (greater than 2 meters from any arc - except when this was not possible). All polygons are closed. All dangling nodes have been eliminated. Pseudo nodes have been removed.
Edge-Matching - All pseudo vertices have been elimintated along the neatline. All nodes along the neatline have a matching node with its adjacent tile. Adjacent polygons between tiles have matching MUID values.
Consistency - All QUAD tile SO AAT and PAT files were verified to assure consistency in number and definition of items.
Quantitative_Attribute_Accuracy_Assessment:
Attribute_Accuracy_Value: 1.00 map units
Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation: Fuzzy Tolerance
Quantitative_Attribute_Accuracy_Assessment:
Attribute_Accuracy_Value: 70.00 map units
Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation: Dangle
Logical_Consistency_Report:
NRCS Soil Attributes are available as a set of data base (.DBF) files from VCGI. The data product is called SOILATTR. These can be linked to this data via the MUSYM and MUID fields. Each county has its own custom set of attributes, therefore one should NOT attempt associate attributes from one county to another.
Certain node/geometry and topology GT- polygon/chain relationships are collected or generated to satisfy topological requirements (the GT-polygon corresponds to the soil delineation). Some of these requirements include: chains must begin and end at nodes, chains must connect to each other at nodes, chains do not extend through nodes, left and right GT-polygons are defined for each chain element and are consistent throughout, and the chains representing the limits of the file (neatline) are free of gaps. The tests of logical consistency are performed using vendor software. The neatline is generated by connecting the explicitly entered four corners of the digital file. All data outside the enclosed region are ignored and all data crossing these geographically straight lines are clipped at the neatline. Data within a specified tolerance of the neatline are snapped to the neatline. Neatline straightening aligns the digitized edges of the digital data with the generated neatline (i.e., with the longitude/latitude lines in geographic coordinates). All internal polygons are tested for closure with vendor software and are checked on hard copy plots. All data are checked for common soil lines (i.e., adjacent polygons with the same label). Quadrangles are edge matched within the soil survey area and edge locations generally do not deviate from centerline to centerline by more than 0.01 inch.
The quadrangles in this survey are edge matched to quadrangles in adjacent SSURGO certified soil surveys, Washington County and Rutland County, Vermont, and the survey area boundaries match.
Most feature edges (polygon and line segments) match adjacent ones in the edge matched survey areas, however, most feature labels don't match the adjacent feature labels in edge matched surveys.
Descriptive attributes (tabular information about the polygons and line segments) were developed specifically for each survey area. Although most don't match exactly, the descriptive attributes of most polygon and line segments in this survey are nearly the same as adjacent ones in edge matched soil surveys.
Completeness_Report:
This data set is a digital soil survey and is the most detailed level of soil geographic data developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. The information was collected by digitizing maps, by compiling information onto a planimetric correct base and digitizing, or by revising digitized maps using remotely sensed and other information. Soil surveys are mapped based on field observations to a 3-acre minimum mapping unit with delineations depicting the dominant soil (some soil surveys have many soil polygons smaller than 3 acres). Inclusions of other soils, too small to be delineated, may be present within a mapped soil unit. The depicted soil boundaries and interpretive maps derived from them do not eliminate the need for on-site sampling, testing, and study. In addition, the map and its interpretations should not be used as a substitute for detailed engineering designs. The same boundary lines were used between counties, allowing clean plotting of data across county boundaries. Gaps between the NRCS data for adjoining counties were resolved by going back to the NRCS source materials. These soils data were developed in conjunction with the RF 5000 scale surface waters data (coverages SWnnnn) for these four counties. The polygonal surface waters data (rivers with shore lines and lakes) was first interpreted from RF 5000 scale orthophotos and digitized, then put directly into the soils data to become the polygonal surface waters for this data layer (GeologicSoils_SO). Other soil unit lines were then snapped to the surface waters to generate topologically clean soils data with polygonal water identical to that of the WaterHydro_VHD data layer.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Soil unit boundaries are interpreted from soil test pit data, thus they are inherently approximate. Linework was captured to within a tolerance of approximately a line width, corresponding to approximately 6 meters (about 20 feet) at the RF 20,000 mapping scale. The locational accuracy of soil delineations on the ground varies with the transition between map units. For example, on long gently sloping landscapes the transition occurs gradually over many feet. Where landscapes change abruptly from steep to level, the transition will be very narrow.

The Rutland SSURGO data was downloaded from the soil data mart on 4/20/2007. The portion of the Rutland/Washington join along the Poultney River was re-digitized to match the 1994 Vermont digital orthophotography. Some slight changes were made to soil polygons in areas where the new hydrology configuration differed from the previous version. Topology was validated (no gaps, no overlaps). The feature dataset was then sent to the Madison Digitizing Unit, in Madison, Wisconsin. The entire Poultney River water polygon was then placed in the NY dataset, meaning that Rutland soil polygons join to NY water in the revised area. The data were then run through the 20040524 ReCert AMLs provided by NCGC and submitted to the Soil Data Warehouse for archival and distribution. Operator - Martha Stuart, VT NRCS

Map Unit Delineations are closed polygons that may be dominated by a single soil or nonsoil component plus allowable similar or dissimilar soils, or they can be geographic mixtures of groups of soils or soils and nonsoil areas.
The map unit symbol (MUID) uniquely identifies each closed delineation map unit. Each symbol is linked to a map unit name. The map unit symbol is also the key for linking information in the TOP20 tables.
