Abstract:
HISTORIC_VTORTHO5KV1_1974_1992 consists of scanned and georeferenced 1:5000 scale panchromatic (black-and-white) VT orthophoto acquired and compiled between 1974 and 1992 under the auspices of the Vermont Mapping Program (formerly part of the VT Tax Department, disbanded in 2008). The mylars were scanned and georeferenced by Heindel and Noyes in the early 2000s, now Waite-Heindel Environmental Management. Waite-Heindel has given the State of Vermont permission to release the scanned and georeferenced orthophotos within the public domain. VCGI received the scanned orthos in MrSID image format, converting them to Cloud Optimized GeoTIFFs and JPEG2000 files for upload into the VT Open Geodata Portal. Files were renamed to match VCGI's naming convention (VT_<TILENUM>_<YYYY>). The year of acquisition (YYYY) was pulled from the orignal MrSID's file name (<TILENUM><YY>), the accuracy of which is unknown. Other information indicated that these YYYY date stamps might be inaccurate. The aerial photos were flown at an altitude and focal length necessary to support the creation of orthophotos at a scale of 1 to 5000. Photos were generally acquired during spring leaf-off conditions between 1974 and 1992. The tone and contrast varies significantly in some cases between image tiles. This may be a result of the photo scanning process and/or differences from one photo to the next given differences in ground conditions and lighting.
