The Renewable Energy Atlas of Vermont and this dataset were created to assist town energy committees, the Clean Energy Development Fund and other funders, educators, planners, policy-makers, and businesses in making informed decisions about the planning and implementation of renewable energy in their communities - decisions that ultimately lead to successful projects, greater energy security, a cleaner and healthier environment, and a better quality of life across the state. Energy flows through nature into social systems as life support. Human societies depended on renewable, solar powered energy for fuel, shelter, tools, and other items for most of our history. Today, when we flip on a light switch, turn an ignition or a water faucet, or eat a hamburger, we engage complex energy extraction systems that largely rely on non-renewable energy to power our lives. About 90% of Vermont's total energy consumption is currently generated from non-renewable energy sources. This dependency puts Vermont at considerable risk, as the peaking of world oil production, global financial instability, climate change, and other factors impact the state.

There are three categories of geothermal potential presented in the Atlas, all designed with the residential user in mind. These three categories are:
1. Open Loop System: Open loop geothermal systems can use well water as a heat exchange fluid that circulates directly through a ground source heat pump. Once the water has circulated through the system it returns to the ground through the well, a recharge well, or surface discharge (i.e., ?bled off?, which may require permits). The U.S. Department of Energy suggests that open loop geothermal systems are ?practical only where there is an adequate supply of relatively clean water, and all local codes and regulations regarding groundwater discharge are met.? Wells were sorted by yield (gallons per minute), depth, static water level, and depth to bedrock. Wells that have modest depth to bedrock, modest to good yields, and a relatively high static water level are desirable.
2. Closed Loop: Horizontal or Vertical Systems: The ground heat source is gained through either a series of ?loop pipes? placed in vertically drilled holes or horizontal loops buried to a soil depth of at least 6 feet. These are alternatives to wells with low yields and low static water levels and thickly overburdened soils that are easy to dig, maintain significant moisture during the heating season and are good thermal conductors, e.g., not Clay or gravel.
3. Closed Loop: Pond System: The ground heat source comes from a pond of sufficient size (> ½ acre), common depth greater than 9 feet (may require permits) and little or no water flow through.

Data production was automated using both the Python scripting and ESRI Model Builder environments. Since all of the RE Atlas GIS data is static and a representation of reality taken at a snapshot in time, the effects of data quality, accuracy and timeliness are in force and impact the results here as they would any other project. All analytical results should be qualified relative to the data sources employed and a judicious view adopted when comparing data from different sources. All data was processed within a set spatial data extent in the Vermont State Plane coordinate system. All raster data processed using a consistent extent, snap raster and cell size. Points, nodes, lines, and areas conform to topological rules. Lines intersect only at nodes, and all nodes anchor the ends of lines. Lines do not overshoot or undershoot other lines where they are supposed to meet. There are no duplicate lines. Lines bound areas and lines identify the areas to the left and right of the lines. Gaps and overlaps among areas do not exist. All areas close.
