Abstract:
The ElevationDEM_LKCHDEM data layer includes bathymetric data derived NOAA nautical charts. All points were digitized from the RF 40,000 scale NOAA charts for Lake Champlain. The original data released in 1992 did not include information from Mallets Bay north and from the Crown Point bridge south. VCGI added data for these missing areas in 2003 by taking points from the LCBP data bundle (LAKEBATH). VCGI also replaced the shoreline points in 2010 using the shoreline as defined in the VHDCARTO dataset.

All digitized points were plotted and overlayed on the original NOAA charts to check for missing points. Point depths were not check in this manner. Querys were run in tables to check for unusual point values. After the project was finished and the NOAA charts returned to Jeff Laible, two points with unusual values were found. They were deleted. The location of one deleted point is known - 78,480.20 East and 242,462.35 North.
Points were added by VCGI in 2003 for areas which did not have data (Mallets Bay north and Crown Point bridge south). The data was captured from the LCBP data bundles LAKEBATH layer. VCGI did not QA/QC this added information.
Shoreline points (DEPTH_FT=0) were replaced using points generated from VHDCARTO. Existing shorelines points were deleted. Vertices from Lake Champlain polygons from VHDCARTO were converted to points and appended to LKCHDEM. This should significantly improve the shoreline delineation.

The data were originally digitized to test a nutrient flow model developed by Jeff Laible at UVM. All depths values found on the NOAA charts were digitized.
