Description:
Abstract:
Nitrate Leaching Index data for the state of Vermont. This is a derivative product based on the SSURGO soils data for all counties except Essex Co., which does not yet have SSURGO soils data. Precipitation data from PRISM averaged over the 1971-2000 30-year span was used in the Leaching Index formulae. Layer was dissolved so that soil polygons with the same leaching index category were merged. 68 polygons in this layer.
Purpose:
Created to help conservation planners advise farmers on environmentally benign manure spreading practices, to limit nitrate infiltration to groundwater and eventually to surface water. If the index is above 10, spreading should not occur during late fall or early spring, and other recommendations apply.
Supplemental_Information:
MAP and MWP (Oct-Mar) precipitation data were used in these calculations.

Process_Description:
1. Load latest soils SSURGO spatial data from the VCGI "Vermont Soils Data CD". Convert the coverage to a shapefile. 2. Join the hydrologic soil group to the soils dbf file using muid as the linking column.* (The HSG of the first major component was used for complexes, undifferentiated units and associations.) 3. Create a new column in the dbf table. Format it as "string" 12 characters wide, named "Nitrate_I". 4. Use querybuilder to select rows by a HSG and convert to new shapefile. Create a separate shapefile for HSG "A", "B", "C", and "D", as well as one for "W" and "not rated". 5. Recreate the precipitation maps from the FOTG in ArcView. There is a separate map for each HSG. 6. Populate the "Nitrate_I" column. For HSG = "W", populate the nitrate leaching index as "water". For HSG = "not rated", populate the leaching index as "not rated". For each HSG, clip to the precipitation ranges on the corresponding overlay, then populate the appropriate leaching index based on the FOTG guide. 7. Merge the files back together. 8. Dissolve the shapefile on the "Nitrate_I" column.
* NOTE: Miscellaneous land types such as Quarries, Mines, Dumps, Gravel Pits, Fill Land, Fresh Water Marsh, Rock Land, etc. have no hydrologic soil group assigned and therefore cannot be assigned a nitrate leaching index. These are "not rated".
